What Is Encryption?
At its most basic, encryption is scrambling a message so that only someone with the right "key" can read it. When you send your message, a lock is applied; only the key in the recipient's hands can open that lock.
Imagine putting a letter in a sealed, locked box. Even as the box passes from hand to hand in the mail, only the person with the right key can open it. Whoever touches the box along the way cannot see what is inside.
What Does "End-to-End" Mean?
The crucial part is hidden in the phrase "end-to-end." In some systems, a message is encrypted as it travels from your device to the server, but when it reaches the server it is decrypted, becomes readable there, and is then re-encrypted and sent to the recipient. In that case the server, meaning the company in the middle, can see your message, even if only for a moment.
With end-to-end encryption, the message is locked on your device and opened only on the recipient's device. No point in between, no server, no intermediary can unlock it. So truly only the two ends, the sender and the recipient, can read what is said.

There is a big difference between a company promising it does not "read" your messages and a company being unable to read them. The first is a matter of trust; the second is a matter of mathematics.
End-to-end encryption makes the second possible. Because Zerolog's servers technically cannot see your message content, you are not left having to take our word for it. Data that cannot be seen cannot be leaked, subpoenaed, sold, or exposed in a breach.
Ephemerality: The Piece That Completes Encryption
End-to-end encryption is powerful on its own, but Zerolog goes one step further. Messages are ephemeral; each has a time-to-live, and when that time is up, it disappears.
When these two come together, privacy compounds. Encryption keeps your message protected throughout its journey; ephemerality keeps it from lingering forever even after it arrives. Even if a device fell into someone's hands years later, there would be no history to read there, because nothing was ever archived.
